This time of year around Christmas and New Year’s, workers in all types of jobs take time off to enjoy the holidays and spend time with family and loved ones. Or maybe they are just using up those remaining vacation days. You know, use ‘em or lose ‘em! Whether you are blue collar, white collar or no collar, there’s a good chance you are not at the office or on the shop floor or on your sales route logging some “windshield time.” You are at home relaxing. If that’s the case, are you checking your mobile device to see if you have any job-related email? Are you taking advantage of your smartphone or tablet and taking some of the new mobile learning your company is making available? And if so, are you “working?” Read more »
Judy Hansen: Swedish Medical Center Interview
We at Float recently had the opportunity to visit Swedish Medical Center to speak with Judy Hansen, director of employee learning, management, and organizational development.
Swedish has about 10,000 employees who need to meet an annual education requirement. One of the ways she can facilitate that learning is through mobile learning. QR codes, Twitter and more are starting to infiltrate their daily conversations at this major institution. It’s an exciting time to be involved in learning with healthcare.
“We cannot afford to take people away from their full-time job to sit in the workshop as much,” Judy said.
“Or responsibilities,” I added.
“Exactly,” Judy said.
Judy is working with a team to develop just-in-time learning applications. Material is delivered through a website or through mobile apps. Blended learning’s identity is shifting. See how Swedish is adapting to this new mode. It’s no longer just classrooms and books, but rather eLearning, mobile, performance support and more.
For instance, Judy talked about downloading a map of a facility with pictures and videos of certain departments to help her find a physician with whom she needed to speak. Watch this video to see how a leading-edge medical center is starting to integrate mobile into their learning programs.
If you’re in health care, let us know how mobile applications are helping your profession. What apps have you seen? Which apps help you?

mHealth and the Mobile Opportunity
Over the past year or so, there has been quite a buzz building around mHealth. Sometimes a technology comes along that really meets the needs of an industry, and when that happens, we have to ask ourselves: “How can we use this?”
In the case of mHealth, we are instantly seeing ways we can leverage mobile devices to improve healthcare. I have read several articles on how mobile technologies are providing better access to personalized healthcare for patience, better performance support tools for medical professionals, and of course, access to training via a mobile device (or mLearning). Tips For Creating Rapid Video For Learning
For several years now, I have been attending conferences and interviewing thought leaders on video. I am telling you – it is not fun schlepping high-end gear across the country and through airport security. A camera, lighting, audio gear, and tripod can be heavy and take up a quite a bit of room in your luggage. Of course, I hate checking bags, so that makes it even tougher.

…and the App was Good.
What if I told you there was an app that has been installed on one out of every 17 iPhones, iPads and Android devices, downloaded more than 34 million times and had logged more than 11 billion minutes of usage by its audience? What would be your guess of what that was? Angry Birds? Pandora? Nope, all of these milestones were achieved with no advertising!
The stats given above are of the YouVersion Bible app, a creation of LifeChurch.tv, which is a ministry with 14 locations nationwide and a very large outreach online. The app, which has had a global impact, is available for iOS, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone, WebOS and Java phones, and even some Web-enabled mobile devices. Read more »
