Are we wired for mobile learning?

Believe it or not, Twitter may be an effective tool for comprehending a language. More than 90 percent of Italian students became more confident in writing Italian after tweeting with other native Italian speakers, according to a study performed by researchers at Montclair State University (76-77).

Presentation: Is Mobile For Me? What Skills Do I Need?

I had the honor of presenting at the second D2WC conference in Kansas City. This event featured a great group of expert speakers on design, development and mobile. I presented a session exploring the character traits that you need to possess or should hone in moving to mobile.

The real point of the session was to simply talk about the fact that joining the ranks of mobile designers and developers has a lot more to do with things inside you than with learning HTML5 or AIR for Android, Objective C or any other technology, really. Overall the comments I received on the topic were favorable and the discussion we had at the end of the session was great. I’ve posted my deck here at Slideshare. If a recording of the session becomes available, I’ll add that as well. I have posted a rather lengthy and in-depth conference recap at my personal blog here.

Which Cross-Platform Framework is Right For Me?

If you got to attend Float’s Symposium in June, you found there was one issue that was prevalent throughout every presentation: the mobile market is fragmented. The number of variables to consider when developing a mobile application are astounding–from screen size to operating system. Worse, in order to sufficiently cover your user base, you have to take almost all of these variables into account at some point.

From a development standpoint, the fragmentation of mobile operating systems presents a huge challenge. Forget for a moment about getting the application to look good on multiple platforms…how do I get it to even launch? Fortunately, we’re not alone in this challenge and we have a number of tools to help us solve the problem of developing for multiple platforms. In fact, the number of options presents a new challenge: which one is right for me?

Mobile Learning in Space

NASA sends two iPhones into orbit

NASA lays claim to many firsts in outer space. Undoubtedly, putting the first man on the moon in 1969 is their highlight. But even as recent as the final shuttle launch last week, NASA had another first up its sleeve: sending the iPhone into orbit.

A Recap Of June: Float’s Mobile Learning Symposium & mLearnCon 2011

June 10th – the day of the Bradley University and Float Mobile Learning Symposium – came and went with a flurry of activity! Our Symposium was very successful; we’re glad that so many of you could make it and sincerely thank you for that. With over 100 attendees for the two-track, one-day symposium, it was a great event for learning and sharing while making new connections in the mobile learning environment. The hallway conversations were equally great for meeting new people and hearing what is going on at major, industry-leading companies and organizations in learning and mobile learning.

For a full recap of what happened at the event, be sure to look for posts marked with Float Symposium on our blog and review the presentations that were posted. There’s some excellent content from a great list of experts on mobile.

Embracing the Mobile Learning Frontier

During the week of June 20, over 600 learning professionals descended on sunny San Jose to attend mLearnCon, the premier mobile learning conference in the United States. It is a robust four days of presentations, demonstrations, discussions and networking all about the emerging field of mobile learning.

It was very obvious at the conference that so many companies are still trying to find their way in the mLearning wilderness. It is as if there are many groups of explorers all poised to venture out into unknown lands with a fear of unexpected perils lurking around every next bend in the trail. Read more »

Prototyping on a Shoestring with Virtually No Tech Skills!

This was originally presented at mLearnCon 2011 by Float’s Chad Udell. The session sparked a lively discussion at the end. Obviously as people move from eLearning to mobile, there has been some confusion as to how to easily prototype your content for use on a mobile device.

Chad also presented a similar session at mLearning DevCon 2011.
