June is in the books, and what a month it was. We met lots of great people on the road at mLearnCon in San Jose and Techweek in Chicago, got some fantastic feedback on our latest app, Tappestry, and had an amazing time hosting our second annual Float Mobile Learning Symposium at the 1871 startup accelerator in conjunction with Techweek.
mLearnCon: The Tin Can API Announcement
We were so happy to see the attendance at mLearnCon in San Jose triple from its first event two years ago. The eLearning Guild has done and continues to do a great job with this event all around – from the keynotes to the concurrent sessions to the side stages and the expo.
It’s no doubt that the Guild knows how to make a big splash. The first morning of the conference, Aaron Silvers formally introduced the world to the Tin Can API, most often explained as the next generation of SCORM. For those of you who haven’t heard of the Tin Can API, it is a tool that helps capture learning using easily defined statements or events. The API records statements made by interactions between people, content and more – in other words, Tin Can API helps trap social and informal learning events. Perhaps the best part is that data stored in Tin Can API systems can be shared with other tools, platforms and reporting systems that are also Tin Can API users. Tappestry: The Social Network for Learning
Float is one of the first organizations to be utilizing Tin Can API, and we’ve done so very beautifully with our new app, Tappestry. Tappestry is the only app in the App Store right now built on Tin Can API, so if you’d like to get a first-hand experience of what this new standard can do, download the app for free and explore it. Tappestry is a social network that allows for storing, sharing and retrieving the social and informal learning we experience throughout our day. Chad Udell’s Latest Book, Learning Everywhere, Offers Tips for Creating a Content Strategy in Your Organization
In addition to Tappestry, Chad Udell’s latest book, Learning Everywhere, came hot from the presses to mLearnCon. Float’s managing director developed a practical guide for mobile training initiatives in organizations. Because this is not an academic book, its conversational tone makes it an easy read. This was written by someone with years of real-world experience creating mobile learning for organizations.
“Whether you are just beginning to investigate mLearning or have a project or two under your belt, this will surely become your go-to book,” writes mobile learning analyst Judy Brown in the book’s forward. “This is a how-to manual for mobile learning.”

Float Mobile Symposium 2012 Caps Off a Great Techweek
Float hosted its second mobile learning symposium this year at the brand-new tech startup accelerator, 1871, in conjunction with Techweek. This event was packed, featuring an all-star roster of speakers including Kris Rockwell from Hybrid Learning, Robert Gadd from OnPoint Digital, Aaron Silvers from Problem Solutions, O’Reilly author Steven Hoober, and Shay Howe from Groupon. Each speaker offered his advice on how to improve learning within your organization, or offered tips or tricks you should be doing to create better experiences for your learners, users, or – since Aaron stated he hated those words – people.
