The next iteration of the iPad should soon be on its way. Apple’s original tablet dropped in April 2010, with its successor, the iPad 2, released in March 2011. Surely the first tablet in the post-Steve Jobs era will soon be on its way. Today, on what would have been Jobs’ 57th birthday, we compile several of the rumors about the forthcoming device.

As far as the iPad 3′s size goes, Matt Burns at TechCrunch has analyzed that it may be thicker than the iPad 2. “That should be considered as a fact now,” Burns writes. “Everything from LTE to the high-resolution screen to the predictably larger battery is cited as the cause for the thicker case. But outside of fanboy flame wars, an extra couple of millimeters doesn’t matter.”

The front panel is said to be very similar to previous iOS devices as it relates to the round home button, but Eric Slivka of MacRumors suggests, based on a leaked picture, that the iPad 3 will feature a front-facing camera and an ambient light sensor.

Daniel Ionescu at PC World posted an iFixIt video of what could be the iPad 3′s display. He notes the iPad 3′s potential high-resolution display at 2048 by 1536 pixels, “which is higher than full 1080p HD video resolution at 1920 by 1080 pixels, and should display much sharper images. The improvement would be similar to the difference between a 3.5-inch iPhone 3GS display and the double-resolution iPhone 4/4S screen.”

With regard to network capabilities, Jonathan S. Geller at BGR posted photos leaked to him of what is alleged to be code from a debug tool. Geller surmises from the information that the iPad 3 will use an A6 processor. “The new processor will also apparently be a quad-core model,” he writes, “making the upcoming iPad 3 the fastest iOS device ever, we have been told.”

AllThingsD’s John Paczkowski has reported that the iPad 3 will be announced during the first week of March.

Of course, for accuracy’s sake, it should be noted that, as usual, Apple itself has released nothing to confirm or deny these reports.

Update: Mashable reports the iPad 3 will be revealed in San Francisco on March 7.

Tell us: What do you do with your old iPad when you hear that Apple is ramping up for another release? Do you recycle it, use it as a test device, pass it on to your children, or donate it to a library? Which iPad 3 feature are you most looking forward to?
