The sad part is that what was true over a year ago when you first wrote this is still true today.
Developers and designers are certainly getting better at taking an adaptive, device-agnostic perspective on web content, but meanwhile, the device-makers seem content to ignore the web and ways that the devices themselves could interact with it better.
Glad there are plenty of people (like you) discussing this stuff,
